Game Vision Statement

Behind closed doors is a puzzle/escape room game, where you hunt for keys and clues that will help you to get the door in the room to open. I found inspiration for this game from other games such as The Room(This link will lead you to information about this game) and also 13 Puzzle Rooms(This link will lead you to information about this game). These games are my inspiration for my idea but they are both very different from my overall idea. These games are considered to be mostly mobile based, which would never be a first person type of game. "13 Puzzle rooms"  revolves around the idea of being able to see the whole room from a top down viewing angle. My idea is to limit the players visibility by making it a first person game, in the hopes to make it as hard as possible.

genre

The genre of game I am trying to tackle, is the puzzle/escape room genre. This genre is usually more inclined to be mobile based but such games as "The Room" is now on the switch, showing there is more of an increase in popularity for games like this, as they break into new ways of playing. The genre is meant to make you as the player think and struggle, as you try and find the way of solving the puzzle for the room you are in. Once the puzzle is solved you would them be able to progress to the next room where you would do the same again.

Gameplay

My game would consist of the player spawning into the room, where there would be a large door on the other side. This door would be closed and the player would not be able to open it. The player would then be tasked with searching the room for a means of opening the door. They would do this by moving stuff, using their flashlight and opening drawers and cabinets. The player would have to find maybe a key, a crowbar or maybe a pin code for a lock, to open the door. Once the door was opened, the player moves into the next room and does the same. The rooms would progressively get bigger and maybe darker, making them harder for the player to get out off.

Mechanics

From this point of my development of the game idea, there are only three gameplay mechanics. The first mechanic is the mechanic of movement. Movement is the basis of everything in the game. The player takes control of the avatar and then searches throughout the room in a first person perspective. This would not be possible without the mechanic of player movement. For this mechanic I will need the camera positioned In a first person perspective and then have the player be able to move the camera in any direction they see fit, without the avatar actually moving position. This will allow for the player to look around the room easily. I would then need to be able to have the avatar move when the player wants them to move. This will be controlled by the player, allowing them to move around the rooms to search for the keys.

The second mechanic is the mechanic of interaction. I want to add a mechanic for the player to interact with the in game objects, such as boxes and other stationary obstacles. This interaction would be to pick up and move them or maybe to observe them from different angles. The interaction mechanic would be part of the controls that when clicked, would allow you to move or pick up objects. The interaction mechanic would also be used to pick up the keys, open the drawers, to open the main doors and so on, which would allow you to proceed to the next room. This mechanic would allow me to get very creative with my puzzle designs.

The final mechanic is the Flashlight mechanic. So the idea behind this is to add a flashlight to the game, to allow for some interesting scenarios. This mechanic would allow me to possibly make a dark room, which the player would have to use the flashlight to find the key. This would be considered a lot harder than the previous rooms the player has searched, changing the game up in an interesting way. It would allow for a difficulty spike and for a different puzzle idea, which I think could be very interesting. I could also implement the flashlight into the other rooms as well, as the player may have to search dark corners in their hunt for the keys.

Resources Required

For the creation of this game, I will need to use the Unity Engine and maybe some resource packs for some general environmental objects. I will also need to source some game music and sound effects online.

Further Game Information

This game will be a challenging puzzle game that will make the player think about what they're going to do to escape the rooms. The rooms will progressively get harder as the player moves through the rooms and the story will unfold. The player will have to reach the exit to understand the true meaning behind the rooms.

The game is going to be run on the Unity Player and could potentially mobile as well, because of the genre its in. I would also like to add more rooms to the game in future so it would be a longer experience.
