This week I made myself a goal to get the door and key mechanic working perfectly. I started by going over my code and reading other peoples code and tips online. This took my ages to finally work out what the problem was, but eventually I found the problem and have it all fixed and working.
Now, when you start the game, you have to find the key and be beside it to be able to pick it up. This is the same with the door, where it will only open once the key is picked up and the player is standing in front of the door. I couldn't be happier to have this done, as it took me ages to figure out the problem.

After I had my main mechanic finished, I decided to play around with the first rooms lighting. I removed the directional lighting and then added some lighting effects to the candles. This was only me experimenting before I build the proper levels.

I then added the final mechanic to my game, which is the flashlight mechanic. This didn't take too long but looks and works great in game. When you spawn in, your flashlight is away, but when you press F the flashlight comes out to help you see better. I think this came out great and I am excited to see what I can do with this. The link to the flashlight tutorial I used is here.
After this stage of development, I am ready to start designing and creating the main rooms.
Hi Eamon,
ReplyDeleteGreat blog post , your game seems to be coming together nicely. The detail of the game is amazing, you can see that you've spent hours trying to make everything look perfect, the layout of your assets looks great as well. The flashlight is a good addition to the game, the small additions to the game make the overall experience better for the player, I like how you included the tutorial you used in the post so people can watch it for help or inspiration when designing the game. Is the game in a P.O.V or will the character be visible during game play. Overall looks like it's coming along great, good luck!!!
Hi Eamon, your game looks great so far, my game also has doors and keys and when adding them I found it difficult to get the doors to animate and then after that getting the keys to work was really difficult. For the furniture and props in your game did you use the same asset or is it all different assets added together because it looks great? For me I used different furniture asset packs, so I had more of a variety to choose from. Anyways so far, your game looks really great, I would really like to see how it turns out. All the best with completing this.
